How to Choose Tapware and Mixers

Your choice of tapware and mixers can make or break the bathroom. The taps are usually the first thing that gets noticed when entering a room, so it is a chance to show off your style and taste. Quality does vary and is usually reflected by the price. The money you save on buying "cheap" taps will probably just go to the plumber who replaces it in a couple of years.

Taps come in all shapes and sizes, so consider these when choosing your kitchen, basin, bath and showers. Make sure your sink or basin that you choose will suit the tapware of your choice.

Consider the following when choosing your tapware:-

  • warranty - question the warranty especially the length and whether it includes labour
  • handles - mixer taps can be either single lever or twin lever, 3 piece tapware are usually either lever handles or wide range of cross handles
  • style - are you trying for a minimalist ultra modern, colonial style or that very square look? Make sure it suits the room and the basin &/or sink.
  • finish - look for a long lasting, low maintenance finish to complement your bathroom. Besides chrome, some taps can come in brass, almond ivory, white, satin or nickel finishes.

Single lever mixers have the advantage of practicality. Spout height and reach should be considered on how it will look on your sink. Gooseneck spouts are convenient for filling jugs and kettles, especially if you have a shallow sink. Pullout "veggie" mixers are increasing popular.

Choose tapware that is functional, practical, looks good and has a strong warranty. With tapware it is generally true that you do get what you pay for. Don't ruin a $20,000 reno on choosing poor quality budget tapware.
